One couldn’t ask for a more dramatic setting, in the foothills of the Mountains of Mourne near Newcastle. Fairways lined with the beautiful flowering Gorse (which is also the course’s fiercest hazard) and Heather and the Slieve Donard peak rising in the background provide a magical setting for one of the world’s finest courses. Founded in 1889, the Royal County Down golf course was designed by none other than Old Tom Morris with H.S Colt and George Combe. This challenging course is characterized by blind tee shots but then, the greens quite visible for the approach shots if you are in the correct side of the fairways. The fourth hole is a remarkable par 3 requiring a clear 217 yard carry over bunkers and whins. The last three holes which were quite simple in their original form had later all been honed to be challenging and interesting by none other than Donald Steel. Put your driver away, keep the ball in play and enjoy the poem that Royal County Down Golf Club is.
