Only ten miles North of Dublin, the Portmarnock Golf Club is a classic links course, which has hosted more than thirteen Irish Opens, the British amateur in 1949 and the Walker cup in 1991 which was won by the American team led by Phil Mickelson. Originally owned by the famous Jameson Distillers, the club was founded in 1894 and designed by W.C Pickeman and others. Playing more than 7000 yards, this masterpiece is characterized by wide but undulating fairways and demanding approach shots to greens which just refuse to hold. Starting off gently, Portmarnock golf course flexes its muscles soon and the most famous holes are the tough par 4, 14th and the beautiful par 3 15th, along the coast. Why the Ryder cup went to the more commercial K club in 2006 instead of this great links course is as Peter Aliss put it “money, money, money’! Nothing however will stop the golf purist from enjoying this timeless gem.
