Muirfield, which will host its 16th Open Championship in 2013 is home to The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers, who in 1744, when known as the Gentlemen Golfers of Leith wrote the first ever rules of golf. The Muirfield golf course though, opened for play only in 1891, thanks to an Old Tom Morris design. Subsequent alterations have made it one of the best and most revered tests of championship golf. To prepare for the 2013 Open, Muirfield swapped land with its neighbour allowing lengthening of the course to give the 21st century ball strikers a sterner challenge.
