Imagine a course crafted by the great Old Tom Morris, largely overhauled with his classy touch by Dr Alister Mackenzie (of Augusta fame) flattened out and robbed of all its Mackenzie charm by John Burke, the local star who could never figure out how to play the course, and then finally, over a painstaking four years brought back to its Mackenzie version by Martin Hawtree. The final result presented to us is a masterpiece and great fun to play on. Lahinch offers an amazing variety of holes from the ‘klondyke’, a puzzling blind 4th hole par5 (used to be par 4!) with a sliver of a fairway and a second shot over the klondyke hill and the equally famous next hole the ‘Dell’, a totally blind Par 3 with a rectangular green hidden between sand hills- two holes untouched since created by Old Tom Morris. After ’Dell’, the course takes one to the waters edge for the next three holes and then takes one through some exciting par 4s to finish at the rather straightforward par 5 18th. Watch out for the famous goats which are said to huddle near the clubhouse when the weather is about to turn bad! Simple clubhouse with a simple restaurant.
