Golf in Sofia has a different quality from that of the more popular Black Sea Region. But it’s no less a golf destination especially when you combine the mixed charms of the city with access to good golf within a small radius. In Sofia, is the St.Sofia Golf Club designed by the Irish player Paul McGinley. Outside of Sofia and near Bansko, a popular ski resort, is Pirin Golf & Country Club, with 2 golf courses and a full-fledged golf academy. An hour of so from Sofia is Pravets Golf Club, designed by Peter Harradine and with extensive golf academy facilities.

Far from being a stop over before heading to the ski or beach resorts, Sofia is fast becoming a destination in itself. The city has a fair share of interesting medieval churches, pieces of Ottoman history, museums and excellent wining & dining options.

It’s also a base for day trips to the towns of Plovdiv and Koprivshtitsa where history is encased in their National Revival era buildings. Another must-see is Rila monastery, a UNESCO heritage site situated amidst the Rila mountains.

BEST TIME TO GOLF IN SOFIA: Travelling in Sofia is best between the months of April and June when temperatures are moderate, rainfall low and you’re nowhere near the crowds that descend in July & August which are also the hottest months in the year. September can still be a good time to visit before the cold weather sets in. The winters are cold & though the surrounding mountains shield it from freezing wind, it is not a recommended time to visit Bulgaria

Type of Climate in Sofia: Temperate Continental climate
